Robot Football Demo Added To Final Schedule

The schedule of events for the second annual Made in Ada Wilson Football Festival has been finalized and it now includes a demonstration of Robot Football, played by a team of robots designed by students of Ohio Northern University's T.J. Small College of Engineering.

If pro football players think their jobs are robot-proof, they'd better think again. These mechanical devices can pass, catch, and block. They've drawn enthusiastic crowds when ONU's robots have played Notre Dame's robots at the Brian Hederman Memorial Robotic Competition at the college in recent years.

The robot demo will take place Saturday Feb. 3 at 8:30 p.m., weather permitting, at the Ada Depot parking lot. While the robots can operate in the cold, they cannot in rain or snow.

The Depot parking lot is where the heart of the Festival is. Hang out there, tailgate, join others in testing your skills in games like an Oven Mitt Football Toss and Tricycle Races, grab a bite to eat at one of downtown Ada's many restaurants and bars, and meet at midnight for the grand prize raffle of a Wilson Super Bowl LII game day football and the football drop at midnight.

Schedule Announced for 2018 Made in Ada Wilson Football Festival

The second annual Made in Ada Wilson Football Festival, celebrating Ada, home of the Wilson Football Factory, as the "Football-Making Capital of America," will reprise favorite events from last February's inaugural event and add several new activities.

The events culminate in the Festival's Football Drop at midnight at the historic Ada Depot parking lot in the heart of Ada's business district, 9 Central Ave. Count down the minutes to Super Bowl Sunday and cheer as a ten-foot long giant football, glowing with lights, drops!  The Super Bowl is the biggest day for the NFL and for the Wilson Football Factory in Ada, whose employees make the official "The Duke" game day footballs and Super Bowl footballs for the NFL.

New to the schedule: a children's Football Pinata Ball Drop, so that little ones can get in on the excitement of the night without staying up until midnight to watch the supersized, 10-foot long football drop in the Depot parking lot.  The "mini ball-drop" will take place inside Center on Central (the former N-Men's Club), 111 Central Ave., at 7:00 p.m.  Several lucky kids will get to take a whack at the candy-filled pinata.  Candy will be available to all kids who come on by to watch.

Also new this year: an exhibit highlighting the Wilson Football Factory, where Wilson has been crafting footballs since the 1950s.  The exhibit will be in Ada's historic Depot, where festival-goers can also snag this year's commemorative, limited edition silk screened posters ($30) and T-shirts ($20).

Returning to the line-up will be a Coaches' Panel, spearheaded by Ohio Northern University's head football coach, Dean Paul, offering analysis of the American League and National League champions who will square off for the title of best in the NFL in Super Bowl LII, the 52nd Super Bowl.    Local coaches  and, new this year, a former NFL umpire, will break down the offensive and defensive strengths and weaknesses of the contenders.  The panel kicks off at 5:00 p.m. at the Bear Cave in ONU's McIntosh Center.

This year's free, football-themed film screening will be "Draft Day," starring Kevin Costner as the general manager of the Cleveland Browns who's under pressure to make a noteworthy draft pick that will generate ticket sales.  With the Browns 0-14 as of this writing, Browns fans will have something to feel good about after watching this film.  The film will screen at an earlier time, 4:00 p.m., at the Ada Theater, 216 S. Main St.

Festival-goers and cold weather thrill-seekers are invited to tailgate at the Depot parking lot.  Last year's event drew about 20 tailgaters.   There will be games in the parking lot prior to the football drop, including an Oven Mitt Football Toss and a Tricycle Race.

Local bluegrass and country band Bad Luck and Trouble returns to Center on Central for indoor entertainment.  Live music will also be available at Viva Maria Pizza and Pasta, 124 E. Buckeye St., which will extend its hours until 11:30 p.m. for the Festival.
